Please note: the dates for the SEA Choreolab 2019 have been changed to 6 to 14 July 2019.

We invite emerging contemporary dance choreographers (or performance artists or physical theatre creators) from Southeast Asia to apply for the Southeast Asian Choreolab 2019.

This international choreographic laboratory will take place at Rimbun Dahan, outside Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 6 to 14 July 2019, facilitated by Australian choreographer Liesel Zink.

This is a joint project of Rimbun Dahan, MyDance Alliance, and World Dance Alliance Asia-Pacific.

Applicants to this project should be citizen of and resident in an ASEAN country (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Burma/Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam) or Papua New Guinea or East Timor.

Choreographic Opportunity in Taiwan

Working with eight choreographers in July 2019 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Three to four choreographers recommended by WDA–Asian Pacific, one choreographer recommended by WDA-America, and one from Europe will be selected to attend the Young Choreographer Project in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. An additional three to four Taiwanese choreographers will also be selected to join the event. The funding is supported by National Culture and Arts Foundation, Bureau Culture Affairs of Kaohsiung City Government, and the Chin-Lin Foundation for Culture and Arts in Taiwan. The project is located in the city of Kaohsiung, in southern Taiwan. The tentative dates for the 2019 event are from July 1st to July 19th, with two performances taking place on the main stage of the theatre in the campus of Tsoying High School from July 20th to 21st.

Choreographers will be selected from lists of names recommended by WDA (Asian Pacific, America and Europe) country delegates. The deadline for the recommendation from each country delegate is January 30 with all documents required sent to Taiwan. Once selected, housing, local transportation, dancers, studios, publicity, production and office assistance will be offered. An honorarium will also be provided: US$ 800 for choreographers from Asian Pacific area and US$ 1200 for choreographers from America and Europe. Participants are responsible for airfare and local transportation between the airport and the stie.

The selected choreographers will set their dance on dancers who will be selected in Taiwan. It is recommended that only young choreographers who feel they can meet the challenges of producing a work under unfamiliar circumstances (and with unfamiliar dancers) should apply. The panel in each country and in Taiwan will also be making their selections based on the choreographer’s potential to become a significant contributor to the field in the future.

Each WDA (Asian Pacific, America and Europe) office will facilitate the selection process in its own country. The selection panel will be WDA network chair(s). Expressions of interest should address the following points:

  1. What you would gain from a professional experience such as this
  2. Why you would like to work in Asia
  3. A brief concept of your work
  4. A 200-word autobiography and a resume/CV

If you are short listed, you will be required to submit WDA (Asian Pacific, America and Europe) a link to an online video (YouTube or Vimeo) of a work sample of your recent choreography, either with a single dance piece or several excerpts (less than 20 minutes). You may also be invited to send up to three photos of your work, which is not compulsory, but will give WDA (Asian Pacific, America and Europe) selection board more ideas about your choreography.

Expressions of interest should EMAILED to the WDA (Asian Pacific, America and Europe) office of each country by January 10th.

Choreographers list who are recommended by the WDA (Asian Pacific, America and Europe) will be sent to Taiwan Office by January 30th. The result of the final selection will be announced by February 24th, 2019 on the WDA-AP website at http://www.wda-ap.org and also through a letter from the office in Taiwan.  Download Registration Form

A new edition of Channels is available to download!

Asia–Pacific Channels is the bi-annual magazine of the World Dance Alliance Asia-Pacific (WDAAP), published by Ausdance National in collaboration with MyDance Alliance in Malaysia. It profiles dance events and activities from WDA members throughout the Asia–Pacific region.

June 2018 Edition

In addition to the usual reports from our executive committee, network heads and chapter reports, here are some highlights from this edition:

  • Our cover image is from the Hong Kong Dance Awards, established by Hong Kong Dance Alliance. Congratulations to long-time WDAAP member Anna Chan who won this year’s Distinguished Achievement Award.
  • Much anticipation in this issue of the Panpapanpalya 2018 Joint Dance Congress with daCi which has just successfully concluded in Adelaide, Australia. We look forward to more reports on this event in the next issue.

New Edition of Journal of Emerging Dance Scholarship

Volume 5, 2017 of the Journal of Emerging Dance Scholarship (JEDS) is now available online at  http://www.jedsonline.net/. It contains double blind reviewed essays, along with a call for submission of essays for the JEDS Vol 6, 2018 issue.

We have introduced an new section for the next Volume, in the form of short Performance Reviews with photographs, that may be easier for non English speaking scholars.

JEDS is designed to serve the needs of international dance scholars who are currently enrolled in a graduate program or within 5 years of having graduated from a graduate program in dance or a related field.

JEDS is a project of World Dance Alliance, and is edited by Prof. Linda Caldwell (Texas Women’s University, USA) and Assoc. Prof. Urmimala Sarkar (Jawaharlal Nehru University, India).

The WDA Global Education Network is partnering with daCi and the University of South Australia to host a global Dance Education Summit in Adelaide, Australia, 8-13 July 2018: Panpapanpalya 2018, http://www.jointdancecongress2018.com/.

Panpapanpalya 2018 will be one of the world’s largest
gatherings of dancers, dance educators, and artists of all ages,
generating new thoughts and ideas for dance learning and
teaching in the 21st century. The congress is centered on four
interwoven themes: dance, gathering, generations, learning,
summarised by the Aboriginal Kaurna word Panpapanpalya,
honouring Australia’s rich Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
dance practices, as well as indigenous dance cultures from around
the world.

Babies, young children, school and university students, dance
artists, community and cultural workers, parents and carers, as
well as educators, will be involved as participants and presenters
coming from all over the world.

  • Performance program — for Children/young people, Tertiary/University students, and Adults/intergenerational. Closing date: 16 October 2017.
  • Scholarly Gatherings — can be, but not limited to, papers, panel discussions, project dialogues, dance research workshops, lecture demonstrations, workshops, posters/installations, and Pecha Kucha. Closing date: 9 October 2017.
  • Twinning Projects — collaborations across the world. Closing date: 1 September 2017.

Registrations for the conference are also open. Early Bird rates close 1 February 2018.

Want a shot at having your short films to be shown at a film festival on October 25th in London? Apply now! Our deadline for submissions is AUGUST 25th.

Project Trans(m)it is now accepting submissions for “Trans(m)it: Movement in Film.” Film submissions under 15 minutes are welcome, specifically works exploring the human body and/or movement in short films. All film styles – documentary, short story, animation, etc – will be considered, with an open mind of what “movement” espouses.

WAAE New Project: Global Arts Learning Action

Established by 3 Europe-based educators, the mission of Global Arts Learning Action is to encourage and enable lower-income countries to place arts learning at the heart of their education systems, and mobilise the world’s educators, artists and cultural organisations to support these endeavours.

If you are an arts educator, you can support the project by sharing your knowledge and experience. We would be excited to hear from you, if you:

  • can suggest examples of promising practices and strategies that we should learn from
  • would like to participate in our workshop and policy seminar in September
  • can connect us to countries who could be interested in working with us
  • can help us to share our thinking with to key audiences

International Dance Day 2017

International Dance Day is celebrated on 29 April every year, and commemorates the birthday of French dancer, ballet master and reformer Jean-Georges Noverre. This year’s IDD message is by American choreographer Trisha Brown, who passed away on 18 March 2017, after a long career as an innovative dance maker.

Planning for the 2017 Global Summit is progressing well and registration will open by April 1. Every detail has to be finalized before registration can actually take place, but many of your questions should be answered below.

 

Flights: You should book your flight to St John’s International Airport, Newfoundland. The code is YYT. Be careful booking since there is a St John in New Brunswick also. We strongly recommend that you use a carrier that flies directly to Canada rather than using a connecting flight through the USA. In Canada connections can be made from major cities such as Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, and Halifax.

Canadian Currency: ATM machines are available at the airport and on campus, but there is no currency exchange counter at the St. John’s airport. Make sure you obtain Canadian dollars before you leave the airport to pay the taxi fare from the airport to campus.

Transportation from Airport: Taxis cost $25 to $30 to Memorial University. The # 14 bus goes from the airport to the Memorial University Student approximately every hour and takes 30 minutes. If you want to rent a car you should do this immediately because rental cars are very limited during the summer. Most major car rental companies rent from the airport.

Accommodation: There are 300 rooms reserved in Macpherson College, Memorial University’s newest residence. These are single rooms sharing a bathroom with the adjacent room in the suite. The rate is $60 per person per night. If you wish to share the suite with a particular person you will be able to indicate the name on the registration form. The Summit runs from the opening Reception, the evening of Sunday, July 23 to the evening of Friday, July 28. Most people will likely depart Saturday, July 29.

There will be a special promotion posted that will permit you to register at this special rate between July 21-30. Payment is due at the time of booking by either Visa or MasterCard. If you are travelling with a partner, there are a few one bedroom suites with double beds. You will need to contact housing (email will be provided) directly to book a suite. Most hotels are not within walking distance of the campus. If you prefer hotel or bed and breakfast accommodation, you may find information under 2017 Global Summit, then click on Tourist Information.

Transportation: Evening performances take place Monday to Thursday downtown, and a traditional kitchen party will take place downtown on Friday evening. Taxis are approximately $10 one way. We recommend that several people share a taxi. Public transportation from the Student Centre is also available to the downtown area and other locations in St John’s.

Currency: All prices are given in Canadian currency. The rate fluctuates daily but is around $1.00 Can = $.74 US.

Registration: Registrations received by June 1 will be $300 regular and $200 students; after June 1 the fee is $350 regular and $250 students. Daily registration is $110 regular and $85 students. Registration includes entry to scholarly papers and panels, workshops, choreographic laboratories, performances on campus in Cook Recital Hall, and downtown at LSPU Hall, opening reception, coffee breaks. Free workshops are scheduled on a first come basis. Please consult your program when you register on campus for workshop times, descriptions and sign up procedure.

Food: Fast food outlets are available on campus but there are few dining options close to the campus. A continental breakfast (pastries, fruit salad, yogurt, toast, cereal, tea, coffee, juice, milk) may be purchased for $9 daily. A box lunch ( meat or vegetarian) may be purchased for $11 daily. Numerous restaurants are open for dinner near the downtown theatre where evening performances will take place. In recent years St John’s has become a food lovers paradise. Award winning chefs will tempt you with fresh seafood, hearty traditional Newfoundland fare, and international cuisine. There is a good choice of both fine dining and a more casual atmosphere.

Performances: On campus performances are scheduled from Monday to Friday in Cook Recital Hall from 3:30-5 PM. Tickets are free to registrants. A limited number of additional tickets ($5) will be available for purchase at the registration table. Evening performances take place downtown Monday to Thursday in LSPU Hall. You may attend the 6 PM or 8:30 PM performance subject to availability. After June 15 a limited number of tickets ($15) will be available through the LSPU Hall box office at http://rca.nf.ca/purchase-tickets/general- information/ You will be able to dine first or dine after seeing the performance. A traditional Kitchen Party is planned at the Ship Pub on the Friday evening beginning at 8 pm with live musicians and dancing. The cover charge is $10, and you can purchase food and drink during the evening.

Information for Presenters and Performers: Please note that anyone presenting or performing must be a current member of WDA. Scheduling will begin April 1, and you will not be scheduled unless both you and your dancers have current memberships in WDA.

Presenters: (papers, pecha kucha, panels and workshops) will receive information about the date and time of their presentation by May 1. Information on equipment will be sent at the same time.

Choreographers and Dancers: Scheduling will begin April 1. Choreographers will be sent information about stage dimensions, lighting plot, equipment available. Full information about your piece and the names of your dancers must be received by April 15. Please note that all your dancers must pay the registration fee and be current members of WDA.
